Satan, I'm your squeeze
Oh no! It's the Purple Claw again.

This is from THE PURPLE CLAW# 1 back in January 1953. I saw a handful of Purple Claw stories in an unauthorized reprint from around 1966 (a guy named Israel Waldman had a casual attitude toward copyrights and put out reprints of THE SPIRIT or RULAH with rushed new covers) and I was taken with the weird feel of the tales, how anything could happen without explanation. The art looked so seedy and disreputable, too. Everyone seems unshaven and rumpled and grimy. Dr Weir, with that skunklike white streak in his hair, never really seemed that trustworthy to me, despite his frequent claims that he worked for decency. Then there was the Purple Claw itself, a strange talisman presented to Weir by a grateful African witch doctor. It was a gauntlet that looked to me as a kid as if it were fashioned out of reptile hide.. maybe from a dragon. Weir wielded it but he also talked to it as if it were sentient and he had to ask co-operation from the darn thing.

awesome again
interesting as hell post. you come up with the damndest stuff and then have a spot-on take on it.

'Oh no! It's the Purple Claw again.' i looked for a Purple Claw tag in your tagroll (did i just coin a new word?) and didn't see one. what an altogether bizarre comic indeed.

earlier today i somehow stumbled across Tura Satana, whom i'd never heard of before. Brima Stone brings her to mind even if only cause she wasn't far in my brainpan. come to think of it, Tura would've made for an interesting mystery guest.

Re: awesome again
Thanks, Zathra_IX. I need to put in a lot more tags.

Re: awesome again
thanks! this thing is completely surreal. trying to imagine a long run of such a comic boggles the imagination. i wonder who currently owns the rights to the property...

Re: awesome again
It only ran for a few issues, and is long out of copyright I think. Like many available properties, Americomics used the character in a slightly altered form (as they did the original Daredevil and Dick Briefer's Frankenstein Monster) in shoddy stories featuring large prominent breasts on every page.
