Hey, my friends. I started the first Retro-Scans (which is still up) in April 2008. Even before that, I had been writing hundreds of pulp reviews on Usenet (remember Usenet?). When all the space allotted by LiveJournal was filled, this More Retro-Scans took over to carry on. It has been a huge amount of fun but, you know, when a hobby starts to become a chore, it's time to give it a rest. Retro-Scans has thousands of reviews and commentaries and annotations and what not archived here already. There are other activities I want to try while I still can.

Thanks again for all the comments and conversation. I will always be touched and grateful by all the support I received from you guys a few years ago when I spent a week in ICU and couldn't go online for a month after that. Your concern meant a lot to me then and I will always remember it.

Retro-Scans will stay up forever as far as I have anything to say about it. And, inevitably, I will start getting ideas for new topics and reviews and general tomfoolery, and the whole thing will start up again. So I will then send out messages to you all and hope you come back.

As our Lajka reminds us each year, yell out "Merry Christmas" loud and clear to those you love. Give them big hard hugs and tell them how much they mean to you. None of us have forever and we have to be good to each other while we can.

UPDATE DECEMBER 10Just popped by and I am so touched by all your comments. Honestly, I'm all mushy and sentimental reading them. Thanks again, be back soon!

Rest well, Doc, both mind and body and I'll be missing you. We all need breaks from routine. Could you put up a link to the other Retro-Scan?

Merry Christmas to you and Lajka and all the bunch, pronker *mwah*

Thanks! I think it's better to announce when you're taking a break.

The first Retro-Scans can be found here: http://dr-hermes.livejournal.com/ It's pretty massive, come to think of it.

This isn't about the eggs, is it?
Thank you so much for all the enjoyment, Doc! I'm fairly new here as well, but after I had the good fortune to stumble across this (I still can't remember how), it immediately became just about my favorite sites on the entire interwebs. It's entertaining and educational, and the people who hang out here are a lot of fun. I learned something interesting and had some great laughs every day. I'm really going to miss it, and look forward to your return. Thanks for all your fine efforts--they have been greatly appreciated, sir!

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and Lajka!

And thanks to you! I'll see if we can send a Rasmussen cousin over to eat everything in your house over the holidays.

Enjoy your break, and a Merry Christmas to you and Lajka! Goodness knows how many hours you must have spent over the years on writing posts for this journal and its predecessor. I'm amazed that you ever had time to do anything else at all. I'll miss your posts.

remember Usenet?

Remember it? I'm one of the few who still uses it. It's still way better than most web forums IMO, LiveJournal being a notable exception.

I'm going to emulate one of my dogs and just go to sleep right in front of your door, so that when you come back I'll be awakened immediately and greet you enthusiastically.

(I won't imitate another of my dogs, who would go to sleep on my bed as soon as I left the house, only to bound out as soon as he heard me at the front steps, conveying by his body language "I was totally guarding the house the whole time you were away! Alert, that's me! I never left this spot! Ignore that big dent in your mattress and the dog slobber on your pillow, I have no idea how they got there!")

Also I'm keeping the lights on. Take care, man.

Enjoy your time off...we'll miss these postings, Doc. Your site is a must-visit every day when I sit down at the PC. And I've learned quite a lot...

Okay, okay ... I won't send the apple I've been preparing!
Thanks for everything, Dr Hermes. This journal has been my first stop of the day for the short time I've been aware of it, and I truly wish you the best for your next endeavor.

Okay, deep breaths.
Seriously, during your hiatus, I'll miss my daily dose of the weird and wonderful during your hiatus, Doc, and all the comments, trivia, and hilarity from fellow readers. You know we all support you and wish you the best, so take your time and above all, be a friend to yourself. Sometimes a feller's gotta recharge his batteries. We've all been there, and will be again.
So, until your triumphant return to these hallowed, hoary halls of Retro-scans, or whatever other underground laboratory you decide to hang your cloak and resume your unholy experiments in, be well! I have spoken!
And best wishes to the wonderful Lajka!!!! Keep doin' that voodoo you do, lil' sister.

Love and thanks, MLP

A shadow shall surely fall over the interwebs with you departure Doc, however I can certainly identify with the decision to leave something that has grown into more of a task to be completed than a joy. I first discovered you when I was researching one of the Doc Savage novels to see if it was worth buying, and the dear departed Web TV page came up as a result. While that page was up, I read every entry in it, and it had a profound effect on my reading as I was introduced to dozens of new books and authors, including, Fritz Leiber, Henry Kuttner, Jack Williamson, Jack Vance, and Roger Zelazny. In fact, Zelazny's, Lord of Light, which I bought after you recommended it, has become my third favorite book, and Vance's, The Dying Earth, a close fourth. It was also the Fafhard and Grey Mouser stories that revitalized my love of fantasy and directly led to my beginning to write fiction again, an endeavor that has resulted in seven novels and numerous short stories. You also introduced my to all time OTR favorites like, Quiet Please, Have Gun Will Travel, Lights Out, and The Hall of Fantasy which has been much of my listening for the past few years. While I first found out about old movie serials from MST3K, your recommendations got me to watch ones of actual quality like The Green Hornet. I then moved to More Retro Scans for my daily does of Doc, and it was a joy to discover so much about the minutia of history, silliness old comics, reading the detailed reviews, and coming up with long insane stories about Gillman and the Rodan/Batman in response to some of the posts. While I am sad to see you go, and will miss the community that has formed here a great deal, I hope your every effort from here on out meets with success, and that you can discover the joy in your new pursuits that once came from here. Good luck to you in all that you do Doc, Farewell, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Stay cool, kid!
I dunno if I ever posted this here before but coincidentally I found this blog while looking up Kim Deitch after a pal of mine posted this on his incredibly gay Tumblr:

The left click/Google search lead me to your Cult of the Clown article, and I've stuck around lurking since then.

But hey happy holidays indeed, rest up. Come back when you feel truly inspired to do so!
