The BUZ SAWYER strip from August 28, 1945. As the fighting got closer to the Japanese home islands, it also got more vicious and costly. With every day, each serviceman realized his chances of surviving the war were that much slimmer. If it came to an actual invasion of Japan itself, few honestly thought they were survive. Then came the surrender. All these young men suddenly realized they had been spared. They would have a chance to return home, get married, start a family, get to grow old instead of dying in the next few weeks or months. I don't think there has been a moment like that for our country since.
